End-stage arthritis of the big toe joint (hallux rigidus) is commonly treated by fusing the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint. In selected patients the joint is replaced instead, with the aim of preserving movement.

  • Joint replacement: the RTS 1st MTP implant, with broachless implantation, an angled metatarsal stem and single-use instruments.
  • Fusion: the IO FiX 2.0 zero-profile fusion device, Omni MTP plates, CoLink XP MTP plates with a transverse compression screw, IBS-B MIS bevelled screws, and NeoSpan SE compression staples.
  • Joint preparation: The Cartilaginator, for preparing the joint surfaces before fusion.

Also known as: Hallux rigidus surgery, First metatarsophalangeal joint fusion, Big toe fusion, MTP arthrodesis, First MTP arthroplasty, Big toe joint replacement
