ProSpon designs and manufactures custom-made implants for patients whose anatomy or bone loss cannot be treated with a standard implant. Each implant is designed from the patient’s own imaging, approved by the surgeon and 3D printed to order.
Features
- Designed from X-ray images or DICOM CT/MRI data.
- 3D CAD model and design proposal with pre-operative planning.
- Surgeon and designer consultation before manufacture.
- 3D printed in titanium alloy Ti6Al4V ELI; stainless steel, UHMWPE and PEEK parts available.
- Optional 3D plastic model of the affected bone.
- Supplied sterile.
Indications
Reconstruction where a standard implant is not suitable, including bone defects in oncology and complex fractures.
Indications, contraindications, warnings and precautions are listed in the instructions for use (IFU).
How it works
- The hospital supplies X-ray images or DICOM CT/MRI data.
- ProSpon builds a 3D CAD model and a design proposal with pre-operative planning. The model can include the starting situation, for example the bone with the tumour, or an existing implant.
- The surgeon reviews the proposal with ProSpon's designer and confirms the final design.
- The implant is manufactured and delivered in sterile packaging.
A 3D plastic model of the affected bone can also be printed for planning.
Materials
- Titanium alloy Ti6Al4V ELI, 3D printed (ASTM F3001-14, ISO 5832-3).
- Stainless steel AKV Ultra 2 (ISO 5832-1).
- UHMWPE (ISO 5834-2).
- PEEK.
- MOTIS (implantable carbon-fibre-filled polymer).
Surface treatments
- Polishing.
- Diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating.
- Grit blasting and hydroxyapatite spraying of stems.
- Annealing in a vacuum furnace.
Examples
- Calcaneus: Ti6Al4V ELI and AKV Ultra 2; polished, with DLC coating.
- Talus: Ti6Al4V ELI and AKV Ultra 2; polished, with DLC coating.
- Wrist and lunate: individual wrist replacement and lunate implant (pictured).

Lead time
Delivery is 6 weeks after sign-off of the final design proposal.
