I.B.S.™ Snap-Off screws are designed for monocortical fixation of metatarsal osteotomies, such as the Weil osteotomy. They are made of titanium alloy, supplied sterile, and come in 2.2 and 2.7 mm diameters.
The screw is mounted on a 25 mm barrel for insertion on a power driver, and the barrel snaps off below the screw head once the head meets the cortex. The screws are inserted with the NeoSys® single-use instrument set.
Features
- Compression between the distal threads and the screw head (lag effect).
- Trocar tip to penetrate the cortex, and a thread profile designed for cortical bone.
- Self-drilling and self-tapping.
- 25 mm barrel for insertion with a power driver.
- Snap-off section below the head, to limit extensor tendon irritation.
- Titanium alloy, supplied sterile, in 2.2 mm (9–14 mm) and 2.7 mm (14–20 mm).
Indications
Fixation of metatarsal osteotomies in foot surgery, for example:
- Weil osteotomy;
- modified distal horizontal metatarsal osteotomy;
- dorsal closing wedge osteotomy.
Contraindications include current or previous systemic, acute or chronic inflammation, active infection, and sensitivity or allergy to the implant materials. See the instructions for use.
How it works
- The screw is self-drilling and self-tapping. Where needed, the cortex can first be drilled with a 1 mm K-wire.
- The screw is inserted on its 25 mm barrel with the NeoSys snap-off screwdriver (on a handle or on a power driver with an AO attachment), or directly with a K-wire driver.
- When the screw head meets the cortex, the barrel breaks off below the head. In osteoporotic bone, the barrel may need to be released before the head reaches the cortex, by a gentle forward motion of the handle or with forceps, to protect the fixation.

Product information
What are the screws made of?
Titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V, to ISO 5832-3 and ASTM F136).
Which instruments are used?
The NeoSys single-use instrument set, which is also used for the I.B.S. compression screws. The screwdriver shaft has an open window to ease removal of the broken-off barrel.
Can the screws be inserted with a power driver?
Yes. The 25 mm barrel allows insertion with a power driver, using the screwdriver shaft with an AO attachment or a K-wire driver.
Where does the screw snap off?
The snap-off section is below the screw head, to limit irritation of the extensor tendons.
