OS2 staples are single-use staple kits for fixation of Akin osteotomies of the proximal phalanx of the hallux. Each staple is supplied sterile with its own instruments, so no reusable tray is needed.
The OS2-VP™ is made of PEEK. It compresses on release, its legs converging by 20° once it is freed from the inserter, and because PEEK is radiolucent it does not obscure the osteotomy on intra-operative or post-operative imaging. The OS2®-V is the stainless steel version, delivered pre-loaded on its inserter, in two widths.
Features
- Two materials: radiolucent PEEK (OS2-VP) or 316L stainless steel (OS2-V).
- OS2-VP: compression on release, with legs converging by 20°, and teeth for stability on insertion.
- Straight (90°) staples, or angled (26°) staples designed to match the metaphysis of the phalanx.
- Interaxis 9 mm (OS2-VP), or 8 and 10 mm (OS2-V).
- Low-profile design.
- Sterile, single-use kits with the staple and its own inserter and drill guide.
Indications
Fixation of Akin osteotomies of the proximal phalanx of the hallux. The OS2-VP is also designed for other similar osteotomies.
Contraindications for the OS2-V include current or previous acute or chronic systemic inflammation, active infection, and sensitivity or allergy to the implant material (316L stainless steel). Indications, contraindications, warnings and precautions are listed in the package insert.
Indications, contraindications, warnings and precautions are listed in the instructions for use (IFU).
OS2-VP (PEEK)
The OS2-VP is made of PEEK, a polymer that is radiolucent, so the staple does not obscure the osteotomy on X-ray. Its legs converge by 20° when it is released from the inserter, and teeth on the legs give stability on insertion. It has a 9 mm interaxis and comes straight (90°) or angled (26°, to match the metaphysis of the phalanx).
- The drill-guide end of the holder is placed across the osteotomy. The first hole is drilled with the 1.6 × 70 mm K-wire, which is left in place, and the second with the 1.6 × 100 mm K-wire.
- The staple is loaded by sliding it into the inserter at 90° and turning it a quarter turn clockwise, which spreads the legs.
- The staple is inserted into the prepared holes and released with a quarter turn anticlockwise. The legs converge to compress the osteotomy, and the impactor seats the staple flush with the bone.
Each sterile kit contains the staple nested in its holder/drill guide, the inserter, an impactor and the two K-wires.
OS2-V (stainless steel)
The OS2-V is a 316L stainless steel varisation staple with an 8 or 10 mm interaxis, straight (90°) or angled (26°). It is delivered sterile, pre-loaded on its inserter, with its drill guide in the same pack.
- The drill guide, which can be fitted to the NeoSys universal handle, is held against the bone to choose the staple width (8 or 10 mm), and the leg holes are drilled with 1.0 mm K-wires (70 and 100 mm) from a NeoSys single-use set.
- The staple legs are placed in the holes and the staple is pushed fully home. The inserter can be used alone or on the NeoSys handle for a longer lever arm.
- A button on the inserter releases the staple. The inserter then closes and serves as an impactor.
All the instruments needed to implant an OS2-V staple are in the implant pack; a NeoSys single-use set is needed for its K-wires, the universal handle or an additional procedure.

Product information
What is the difference between the OS2-VP and the OS2-V?
The OS2-VP is made of radiolucent PEEK and has a 9 mm interaxis. The OS2-V is made of 316L stainless steel and comes in 8 and 10 mm interaxis. Both come straight (90°) or angled (26°).
How does the OS2-VP compress the osteotomy?
Its legs are held apart by the inserter. When the staple is released, they converge by 20°, compressing across the osteotomy.
When is the 26° staple used?
The 26° angled staple is designed to match the metaphysis of the proximal phalanx. The 90° staple is straight.
Are reusable instruments needed?
No. Each OS2-VP kit is a stand-alone sterile pack with its own holder/drill guide, inserter, impactor and K-wires. The OS2-V pack contains its inserter and drill guide; its 1.0 mm K-wires come from a NeoSys single-use set.
