MBCP® is a synthetic bone graft substitute made of biphasic calcium phosphate: a mixture of hydroxyapatite (HA) and beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP). It is used to fill or reconstruct bone defects and gaps that are not intrinsic to the stability of the bone structure, alone or with autograft.

The material has a global porosity of 70%, similar to cancellous bone, from an interconnected network of macropores and micropores. It is osteoconductive and resorbable: it gradually dissolves, releasing calcium and phosphate ions, and is replaced by new bone. MBCP is supplied as granules, sticks, blocks, wedges and cylinders, and as In’Oss™, a mouldable putty.

Features

  • Fully synthetic biphasic calcium phosphate (HA/β-TCP).
  • Two ratios: 60/40 and 20/80 HA/β-TCP (20/80 as granules only).
  • 70% global porosity, with interconnected macropores and micropores.
  • Osteoconductive and resorbable.
  • Granules in vials or a mixing and delivery syringe, sticks, blocks, wedges and cylinders.
  • In’Oss™ mouldable, injectable putty in syringes of 0.5 to 10 mL.
  • Can be mixed with autograft, serum, whole blood or bone marrow aspirate.
  • Supplied sterile; class III medical device.

Indications

A bone graft to fill or reconstruct bone defects or gaps of the skeletal system (for example extremities, spine and pelvis) that are not intrinsic to the stability of the bone structure. The defects may result from trauma or be surgically created.

MBCP can be used with autograft as a bone graft extender, and may be combined with the patient's own serum, whole blood or bone marrow aspirate.

See the instructions for use for contraindications, warnings and precautions.

Material

  • Synthetic biphasic calcium phosphate: hydroxyapatite (HA) and beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP).
  • Two ratios: 60% HA / 40% β-TCP, and 20% HA / 80% β-TCP (granules only).
  • Global porosity of 70%, similar to cancellous bone, from an interconnected network of macropores (over 100 µm) and micropores (under 10 µm).
  • Osteoconductive and resorbable: the material gradually dissolves and is replaced by new bone. The resorption time depends on the size and site of the defect, the surgical protocol and the patient's health.

Forms

  • Granules in vials (0.5–1.0, 1.0–2.0 and 2.0–3.0 mm) or in a mixing and delivery syringe (1.0–2.0 mm), which can be combined with bone marrow aspirate.
  • Sticks and blocks, wedges (straight or rounded) and cylinders (8 to 14 mm diameter, 20 mm long).
  • In'Oss™ putty: MBCP granules in a hydrogel, mouldable and injectable, in syringes of 0.5 to 10 mL. It keeps its shape in the graft site and is gradually replaced by bone.
  • Custom-made shapes on request from the manufacturer.

Shelf life is 5 years for the solid forms and 3 years for In'Oss putty.
